Brandon and I had a four month engagement prior to our wedding for no other reason other than once we decided to get married, we just wanted to be married.

Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times in a person's life. And it goes without saying that planning your dream wedding in four months takes a lot of planning and preparation.

And the planning isn't over once the day is over. Instead, you move from the wedding planning checklist to the honeymoon financial checklist. If you are a newlywed or planning to get married soon, be sure to do these five financial tasks.

Decide how you will manage your money together

There is no right or wrong way to manage your finances as a married couple. What really matters is that you come up with a system that works for you and you've opened up money communication. Here are a few different methods you can use to manage your money together.

  • Joint finances: You and your partner go all-in and combine your bank accounts. With this style of money management, you both have joint checking and savings accounts. All the money goes in and out of the same accounts.
  • Separate accounts: You and your partner each maintain your own bank accounts. You decide together how you will distribute the expenses and who will be responsible for covering each bill.
  • Joint and separate accounts: You and your partner have a common checking bank account that your income goes into and your expenses go out. You also each maintain a separate checking account for personal expenses.

Update your insurance coverages and beneficiaries

One of the first things you will want to do after you get married is update your insurance policies and beneficiaries. You want to make sure that in an emergency, you are both prepared.

  • Life insurance: If you don't currently have life insurance, now is the time to start one. While no one wants to think about the worst-case scenario, you don't want to leave your partner off guard if something happens to you. If you already have life insurance, be sure to update your name and beneficiary as needed.
  • Health insurance: If either of you takes out the other's health insurance policy, check with your employer what documents you will need to do so. If you each have health insurance with your employer, you can review the policies and see who has the best or most cost-effective policy.
  • Car insurance: While your auto insurance coverage can be easily neglected after you get married, it is important! If you don't already have a common policy, now is the time to create one. If you have a common policy, be sure to update your name and marital status. When I got married, my insurance premium dropped dramatically!

Update your financial accounts

After you get married, you and your partner might decide to combine your finances and have joint bank accounts. You can also choose to add yourself as authorized users on your credit cards. Even if you choose to keep separate accounts, you can still update the payee on your accounts.

Your checking, savings, retirement, and investment accounts may have beneficiaries listed, so if anything happens to you, the money in the accounts will go to your spouse.

Create an estate plan

No one likes to talk about the death of one of you right after you get married, but it is a necessary discussion. It is important that you both have an estate plan in place so that if something goes wrong, there is a clear plan for your assets. You may want to consult a lawyer to help you establish a will or trust, medical directive, and power of attorney.

Set common financial goals

Now that you're married, it's time to work out some common financial goals together. While most of the tasks on this list are serious and frankly a bit depressing, this one is actually fun!

Set financial goals together is dreaming and making a plan for your future. Sit down together and brainstorm what you want your life to look like in one, five, ten, and even twenty years. Where do you want to live? Do you want to travel? To buy a house? Start a business? Retire early? Will you have children?

Once you have that vision, write down any goals you would have to achieve in order to get there. While some of these goals may seem distant, now is the time to start preparing your finances for them!

The veggies pack in essential vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients important for health and longevity. And, because they’re rich in fiber, they help to aid assimilation ( aka keep you regular ! ) and keep you feeling full longer.

Using a fitness tracker ( like the Fitbit, Apple Watch or similar ) to track your steps is an easy way to make sure you’re getting enough physical activity each day. We aim for 10, 000 steps daily, which has significant physical and mental health benefits. The Fitbit will also remind you to get 250 steps each hour ( another important measure of health

Conventional household cleaning products are full of harmful chemical ingredients that are not good for our health ( or the health of our kids or pets ! ). Switching to healthier alternatives is a simple way to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins in your home. Similar to cleaning products, conventional skincare and personal care products are formulated with toxic ingredients we should not regularly let absorb into our body’s largest organ. Reduce the toxic burden on your body by switching to non-toxic personal care and beauty products ( see our specific recommendations on deodorant, sunscreen, and green beauty products ).

Maintaining a saine gut has significant impacts on absorption, skin health, immunity, mental health and more. Taking a daily probiotic with a glass of water each morning is one of the simplest things you can do to boost your gut health ( which, in turn, boosts overall health in many ways too ). Aim to eat real food that’s made of whole food ingredients you would have in your own kitchen pantry, or that your grandmother would recognize. ( Yup, this rules out most packaged food, sorry ! ) This is a little different than suggesting you eat only “health foods” ( many of which are increasingly processed ! ). “Real food” includes unprocessed foods like an apple, a cucumber, soybeans or a steak, as well as foods loosely processed from one ( or few ) real-food ingredients, like butter, olive oil, yogurt, tofu, etc. In other words, aim for foods that could be reasonably made in your own kitchen and avoid foods that can only be made in a lab.

Reduce the harmful effects of sitting ( like at your desk job ) by standing up and moving around for a minute or two every half hour.

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for overall health, and sunlight is one of our best sources of it. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight each day—preferably in the afternoon, and without sunscreen ( read more about that here ). Not much sunlight in the winter where you real ? It might be worth supplementing with a vitamin D supplement and/or other food sources of this essential nutrient.

Houseplants help to cleanse your indoor air ( sadly, it probably needs it ! ), they’re pretty, and research even shows they improve mood, creativity and problem solving !

Aim to sweat in some way each day—whether that’s via course, biking, dancing, hot yoga, or any other physical activity you enjoy.
