7 Ways To Sell Your Digital Products Online

Before diving into the digital products, make certain that you do take the time to check out our latest offering, the Little Product Launch Kit. We literally tell you how to create products and what to do to get them ready to sell fast.

Okay, shameless plug over…;-) Onto our recommendations for the best ways to sell your digital products online.

We used SendOwl about 5-6 years ago and this is where I sold my first digital product EVER. It was an ebook and I was so proud of it.

SendOwl makes it super simple to upload digital products and typically takes about 3 minutes or less to do. Once the product is uploaded, you’ll get a specific link that you can then add to your blog post, your email sequence, or post on social media that will drive people to click it and in the end, hopefully, purchase your digital file.

The cost associated with SendOwl is about $15 per month, but this will allow you to customize your products and have 30 of them available for purchase at any given time.

The cons of SendOwl need to be considered as well. Some of the biggest negatives are:

  • Transaction fees
  • No option to build a robust funnel to be able to upsell or down-sell your customers
  • No course creation option
  • Not the best checkout experience for your customers

Even though this is on our list, it’s not really one that is at the top of our recommendations. It works but it just flows kind of funky. When the customers click on your link, it takes them to this weird blank page and that might have them put up a red flag about feeling safe inputting their credit card information. This, in turn, means that you’ll lose sales.

We’ve also found that compared to other online digital platforms, it’s not really that high converting, either.

If you’re a fan of plug-ins, you might find that you really enjoy WooCommerce. It’s created by the makers of WordPress and it runs directly inside WordPress as well.

All you literally have to do is click a few buttons and you’ll have a store on your site, AND it’s free to set up as well.

BUT…the devil is in the details.

The plugin is pretty powerful as it can help you sell products, sell bookings, and literally do almost anything that you need. BUT keep in mind that if your site goes down or crashes, this means that this is also going to go down as well.

This means that you’ll have to have the knowledge on how to get it back up and running and that takes time and energy. This also means that you’ll want to back up your site a lot and as we all know, extra plug-ins can really slow down your site speed as well.

And now that I’ve been a total Debbie Downer, there are positives to using this plugin also.

  • No fee for using but as you grow, you’ll have to invest
  • Able to do a multitude of options

While this isn’t our favorite, it does get the job done. We also don’t feel that the product pages are easily optimized. They’re limited and the flow of them does tend to feel a bit boxy as well.

However, if you have this already and it’s working for you, stick with it. These are totally just our opinions based on what we’ve experienced in the past before moving on to something else or another option on this list.

Three cheers for Teachable!  All our courses and products are on Teachable

I started them about 4 months after SendOwl and I’m so happy that I did. I took the leap and moved all my products and courses to Teachable and it’s worked out really, really well.

Teachable is great for creating coures and it’s a super popular platform that I know my students love.

I also love having all my products in one place and it also helps to build my trust with my audience, too. Because let’s be real…if I up and moved all my stuff from Teachable, it really might set off some alarms. And since we have 90,000 students on Teachable, that’s literally the last thing that we want to do.

While Teachable is great for course, it can work for PDF’s and ebooks and printables as well. You do have the option for adding video which does add more value.

There is also an option to upgrade to a funnel but that will require a fee.

What I currently use is the professional plan and I pay $99 a month for all the features. It’s pricey but for me, worth it. Many people start on the $29 starter plan and then find out later that they can upgrade, which is totally fine.

If you do start out on the starter plan, there is a 5% transaction fee that is tacked on to each purchase. If you sign up for the professional plan, the transaction fee is dropped.

Check out my Course by Number where I go over how to set up and start selling in detail.

While I understand that Teachable can be pricey, don’t forget that you’re running your business on it. Looking professional is important and having the technical support that Teachable offers if something goes wrong is a HUGE value in itself.

We actually use this to sell everything that we have but we then hook up to Teachable to deliver it all. (Don’t worry, it’s not as confusing as it sounds!) We moved from doing our transactions from Teachable to ThriveCart as it provides a much better user experience by being able to offer targeted products with more flexibility.

It also has really cool automation and the ability to tag buyers and customers so that they can then dive in and make the best choices for their needs.

Since we have over 30 products that we sell,  ThriveCart helped us to do a ton of upsells and down sells,  which is awesome. When we started using ThriveCart, we immediately saw a $500 lift per day just from adding their funnels.

I think that the monthly fee is worth it but it’s not perfect for everybody.  BUT WE REALLY DO LOVE IT.

Pros of using ThriveCart:

  • Can have unlimited products
  • Excellent for creating upsells or down sells
  • Great for offering special deals and bonuses

The other really cool part about ThriveCart is that they have a stellar affiliate program. And if you don’t currently get a ton of traffic to your site, this is a great way to incentivize people to push your products to them to help drive traffic to your site.

The negatives of using ThriveCart are that it does have a big upfront investment.

We get that it’s a big fee…We didn’t start here first actually because of that intial fee.

However, since their cost is a $495 one time fee, you literally just have to pay for it once and then you get to use it for life. It does a great job of getting the job done and is super duper simple.

If you want all of the free bonuses on ThriveCart and to learn how to use it – just go through our affiliate link and make your purchase.

We all know and love Etsy, right? It’s extremely popular and super easy to start. You can literally go right now, create a free account and in 30 minutes upload for PDF or digital file to start to sell. (this doesn’t mean you’ll make a sale but you’re getting your foot in the door to start!)

Etsy is awesome if you don’t have a blog yet or are just wanting to list a few printables or an ebook. It’s a super-duper simple platform that is used to drive sales.

And if you take your time and get to know how to do keyword analysis and take great pictures, your products have a great chance of doing really, really well.

There is a cost associated with Etsy, however, every time you load a product. They’ll charge .20 per item listed and do charge a 5% transaction fee as well.

Super popular, super easy to get started. Go right now, create a free account and in 30 minutes you can upload your PDF or digital file and get started. This doesn’t mean you’ll make a sale

And if you have a blog, you can link directly to your Etsy store easily, too.

The biggest issue that we have with Etsy is that there is a ton of competition. People might click on your product link to go check out your Etsy store but then see all the other options to buy as well.

HOWEVER, if you create an awesome product, you should start to see results.

Check out my Printables by Number course on the ins and outs of how to use Etsy.

It really is a great place to get started selling digital products online.

Influencer Soft

This is a brand new tool and we wanted to pass it along for you all to check out. It does have fees but you can try it out for an initial cost of just $1 to see what you think. (and if you do decide to go for it, it does have just a one-lifetime payment option and there are no other fees, ever)

Influencer Soft is a great online platform because you can literally do everything in one place, with one login. This means that you can create a sales page, landing pages, courses, etc., and have them all flow together without stress.

Since everything is in one place, it’s simple to get it to all flow together.

HOWEVER….since it’s a jack of all trades, that also means that it’s a master of none.

It does a good job of integrating all the tools but they’re not the “best” that there are.

Bonus: You’ll get all the goodies on how to use Influencer Soft if you use our affiliate link to make your purchase.

But in terms of getting things up and launched with simplicity, this is a great way to go.

We actually used this digital platform to create the landing page for our Little Product Launch Kit if you want to check it out and see what it looks like! We built it entirely using Influencer Soft and it’s converting really, really well.

Convertkit is normally just an email marketing platform but about 6 months ago, that was all changed. They added an e-commerce side to it so that you can now sell your digital products like printables, ebooks, coaching classes, etc. directly on their platform.

You’re combining the ability to do your email marketing and selling of products, together.

And even if you’re on the free version of Convertkit, you can still collect payments for sales as well! That’s nuts and crazy awesome!

The negatives that come along with this is that there isn’t a funnel capability, but besides that, it’s a fairly simple process that can easily convert to sales.

If you want to learn how to create printables and sell them through Convertkit for free, here is the course for you!

Which digital online platform is right for you?

While this ultimately has to be your choice, we do have our recommendations as well.

If you’re just getting started and you’ve never sold before:

Use Convertkit and Etsy at the same time

With a simple one time set up with Etsy and no need to worry about updating or checking in, it’s a super simple process to start selling fast. And when you combine that with Convertkit, you can then focus on building your email list and also listing specific products at the same time. One time set up with Etsy, no updating, no checking in 0 you load and good to go

Our other recommendation and idea to think about is:

Influencer Soft

The reason for this is that some people fall off right in the beginning as it’s hard to get started and scale their sales and business. And if you sign up for something free, you aren’t taking the steps that you need to invest yourself completely or hold yourself accountable. And if you’re not invested, your motivation to keep going just might stop.

But remember…It’s always darkest right before the dawn, right?

If you’re just getting started, consider signing up for Influencer Soft and try it out for a couple of weeks to see if you like it. It might be an investment but then you’re committing yourself to success.

As you start growing and you start to want to sell courses, you can then combine the powerhouse combination of Influencer Soft and Teachable. These two offer great value for scaling your business.

But Rememeber….

We’re not here to tell you exactly what to do. You have to consider your budget and the risk factors that might happen as well.

And ultimately, the tool isn’t what is going to make or break your success. YOU being there and being genuine is what is going to matter. Your products and choices can grow with you as you rock and roll.

Sometimes it can feel like maintaining a healthy lifestyle is an overwhelming challenge that doesn’t fit within the realities of daily life. It’s tough to hold down a full-time job, eat well, train for a marathon, make homemade green juice, spend quality time with your family/partner, and meditate for an hour each day. Coffee’s great too, but it’s best to start your day by re-hydrating with a full glass of water. Hydrating first thing in the morning helps to aid absorption, enhance skin health and boost energy. Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a simple way to get a little more physical activity in your daily life. It also strengthens and tones your legs and core while you’re at it ! A simple triche for saine eating ( and portion control ) is to make half your plate veggies at each meal. The veggies pack in essential vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients important for health and longevity. And, because they’re rich in fiber, they help to aid absorption ( aka keep you regular ! ) and keep you feeling full longer. Using a sport tracker ( like the Fitbit, Apple Watch or similar ) to track your steps is an easy way to make sure you’re getting enough physical activity each day. We aim for 10, 000 steps daily, which has significant physical and esprit health benefits. The Fitbit will also remind you to get 250 steps each hour ( another important measure of health
Conventional household cleaning products are full of harmful chemical ingredients that are not good for our health ( or the health of our kids or pets ! ). Switching to healthier alternatives is a simple way to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins in your home. See our Healthy Cleaning Guide for a complete list of recommendations, and what to look for when choosing safer household cleaning products.
Similar to cleaning products, conventional skincare and personal care products are formulated with toxic ingredients we should not regularly let absorb into our body’s largest organ. Reduce the toxic burden on your body by switching to non-toxic personal care and beauty products ( see our specific recommendations on deodorant, sunscreen, and green beauty products ).
Maintaining a healthy gut has significant impacts on digestion, skin health, immunity, mental health and more. Taking a daily probiotic with a glass of water each morning is one of the simplest things you can do to boost your gut health ( which, in turn, boosts overall health in many ways too ). Learn more about the health benefits of probiotics ( and all the ways to get them in your diet ), and site our favorite probiotic supplement here.
Aim to eat real food that’s made of whole food ingredients you would have in your own kitchen pantry, or that your grandmother would recognize. ( Yup, this rules out most packaged food, sorry ! ) This is a little different than suggesting you eat only “health foods” ( many of which are increasingly processed ! ). “Real food” includes unprocessed foods like an apple, a cucumber, soybeans or a steak, as well as foods loosely processed from one ( or few ) real-food ingredients, like butter, olive oil, yogurt, tofu, etc. In other words, aim for foods that could be reasonably made in your own kitchen and avoid foods that can only be made in a lab.
Reduce the harmful effects of sitting ( like at your desk emploi ) by standing up and moving around for a minute or two every half hour.
Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for overall health, and sunlight is one of our best sources of it. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight each day—preferably in the afternoon, and without sunscreen ( read more about that here ). Not much sunlight in the winter where you live ? It might be worth supplementing with a vitamin D supplement and/or other food sources of this essential nutrient.
Houseplants help to cleanse your indoor air ( sadly, it probably needs it ! ), they’re pretty, and research even shows they improve mood, creativity and problem solving !
Aim to sweat in some way each day—whether that’s course, biking, dancing, hot yoga, or any other physical activity you enjoy. See our Fitness Guide for more workout ideas, as well as tips and tricks for building regular physical activity into your daily life and a downloadable fitness planner you can use to outline your own custom sport plan to stay on track.
Green smoothies as a snack or simple, on-the-go breakfast are an easy way to get your greens in each day. Check out our curated list of saine ( veggie-packed ! ) smoothie recipes for our favorite starter green smoothie recipe ideas.
“The only difference between a good day and a bad day is your attitude. ” It’s true—mindset is everything ! Cultivate a positive mindset by recognizing negative thought patterns and countering them with positive thoughts or affirmations. Here are more mindset resources for positive thinking.
Most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night. But in addition to quantity, quality of sleep matters too ! Follow our tips on getting quality sleep—things like keeping your bedroom cool at night, avoiding blue light after dark, and more.
