How is everybody? Survivor? To stay positive?

I know it's been a minute since I posted anything here on the bloggity blog. Will, momentum, Kevin and I went to NYC at the end of June to see my family and ended up staying about 6 weeks longer than planned. Since I didn't have my kitchen or my photography gear with me, and because I don't see my family nearly as often (thanks, 'Rona), I took the summer off the blog.

I really enjoyed taking the time to be a little unplugged, but now I'm back with plenty of fun ideas to share with you just in time for fall!

Call me basic, but this is my favorite time of year. While we still have many warm days in Austin, the mornings and evenings are starting to get a bit cooler. I've already put pumpkins on my porch and put on a pair of leggings, so I'm 100% there for that, fall.

The ONLY thing the cooler temperatures bring that I'm not a big fan of is dry skin. Itchy, cracked, dull skin… I'm prone to all this nonsense. I have tried several body lotions in the past, but they either didn't do the job, I didn't like the texture, or they were just too expensive, so I decided to make my own!

What do you need to make this whipped body butter?

You can make this body butter in your own kitchen with a few natural ingredients: shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, olive oil, and your favorite essential oils.

Shea Butter is excellent for sealing in moisture, making it ideal for dry or rough skin. If you saw the bottom of my runner's feet you would know I need this BAD. Now Foods Natural Shea Butter has a rich, luxurious texture that feels so great when whipped into this mixture.

Cocoa butter is another awesome moisturizer. It's great for sensitive skin and can even improve the appearance of blemishes. Now Foods Pure Cocoa Butter is in its natural state, which means it's brick-solid at room temperature. Give it a little heat, it will soften and blend perfectly into your body butter.

Coconut oil is one of my favorite products because it is so versatile. I use it to remove makeup, to cook and now I also use it in this body butter. Natural coconut oil is rich in skin-friendly saturated fats. It is smooth and leaves the skin silky.

Olive oil is another powerful ingredient. It's delicious on food and moisturizing AF on the skin.

I use essential oils only for perfume. One of my favorites is grapefruit oil. It smells refreshing and energizing, that's exactly what I want from a daily body butter. That said, if I did a lather before bed, I would probably go for lavender or a peaceful blend of scents. Feel free to include your favorite scent or not at all.

How do you do this?

Like all of my recipes, this one couldn't be simpler. Place equal parts shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil and olive oil in a double boiler and heat until everything is melted.

The mixture will look like a large bowl of olive oil. When it reaches that point, add your essential oils (if you choose to use them). I use around 50 drops for a hint of scent, but it really depends on you and how strong a scent you like.

Place the bowl in the refrigerator for about an hour and a half until it just begins to harden.

Using a stand or hand mixer, beat the mixture until light, fluffy and resembles frosting.

Put it in a jar and let sit in the fridge for about half an hour. After that, you can store it at room temperature (nothing too hot or all ingredients will start to melt) and use it whenever you need a good body butter action.

  1. Place the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and olive oil in a double boiler and heat until they are melted together (the mixture will look like a giant bowl. olive oil).
  2. Remove from the heat and stir in your essential oils if you use them (the more drops, the stronger the scent).
  3. Chill in the refrigerator for about 90 minutes or until the edges start to harden slightly.
  4. Whisk the mixture using a stand or hand mix for about 10 minutes, or until the mixture is light, fluffy and looks like buttercream frosting.
  5. Scoop into a wide-mouthed glass jar and refrigerate another 30 minutes to set.
  6. Store at room temperature and use whenever you need to give your skin some love.
