Lost boys rules

  1. No talking to pirates
  2. Believe in fairies
  3. Think of happy things
  4. Never grow up

Fortunately, these are rules that I can easily follow! This week I went to try the Peter Pan afternoon tea which recently launched at the picturesque Aqua Shard located on level 31 of The Shard. Our afternoon tea was the perfect view of the city as we got to sample some magical treats from this afternoon themed tea.

Peter Pan Afternoon Tea is inspired by popular characters and scenes and JM Barrie's beloved novel, and is partnered with Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity (GOSH Charity), where £ 2 of each afternoon tea sold for the year will be donated to charity.

The tea begins with an illustrated nod to Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Captain Hook on the plates and the menu opens to reveal a Neverland of inspired sandwiches and sugary treats. We started with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rose and our selection of teas. There are two special teas available; The Darling Tea which celebrates Wendy Darling and is a black tea infused with rose petals and vanilla and also The Adventure Tea inspired by Peter and is a black tea with citrus flavors and a touch of ginger. You also have the choice from a selection of your usual teas.

For an afternoon, you can opt for Veuve Clicquot champagne or one of the selected cocktails. These are aptly named Fairy dust - Botanical Ketel One Mint and Cucumber, Apple Liqueur, Ginger Switchel, Kaffir Lime, Absinthe and Gold Powder and Never grow up punch is an alcohol-free option with pineapple, pear mash, elderflower tonic and grenadine.

The tea arrives at your table on a pirate ship the Jolly Roger to be exact and when activated by the dry ice it starts to fog up, it really is such a special and thoughtful touch. Really make sure you have your camera ready for those Instagram moments! The carefully brewed afternoon tea doesn't end there, each salty and sweet treat has a unique twist and relates to the novel.

The finger sandwiches are wrapped in Lost Boy's rules and include a chicken sandwich with bacon as well as an egg and cucumber, both delicious. The sausage roll was my favorite savory part and represents Peter Pan's favorite food, baked pork.

You also have brioche-shaped fireplaces inspired by Neverland's "charmingly colored" mushroom stools. Next, the Captain Hook 'Codfish' cod croquette which takes its name from the nickname Peter Pan for his nemesis. I enjoyed all of the salty parts and could have easily eaten more which was offered but knew I had to save some room for the candy.

Starting with the hot scones served in a treasure chest, they were a mix of fruit and plain scones and were just the right size being slightly smaller than your big ones. These were accompanied by coconut curd, raspberry jam and apple-mamme. I liked the different flavors of the scones because it's usually not something you see.

I couldn't wait to dive into the cakes, you have; a Tinker Bell Cookie in which our server came and sprinkled her with edible gold fairy powder, a lovely touch and perfect for the kids who come for tea. Tick-Tock the crocodile is a sweet jelly of raspberries and rooibos with a crocodile gum.

Hook's Perish Cake is a lime-coconut-inspired green cake and references Captain Hook's dastardly plan to leave a "big, rich, thick cake with green sugar in it." And finally you have Secret Entrance to Peter Pan's Hollow Tree which is shaped like the entrance to the tree trunk of the Lost Boys house under the ground, it is a dark chocolate mousse cake with raspberry jam and a chocolate sponge.

I really enjoyed this afternoon tea and loved how thoughtful it was, it's such a special afternoon for all ages.

Peter Pan Afternoon Tea is served Thursday through Sunday from 12:15 to 4:15 p.m., priced at £ 52 per person, or £ 68 with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Champagne, £ 75 with a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rose.
