Every year in the fall, I hold my breath to wait to see the colors reveal themselves on our hills. If you don't know, trees don't show the same color every year. Their color is determined by this year of growth. The cold days where they rested until the last moments before their colors turned are what decide which colors they will show. The year writes their history of parts of themselves that we consider to be their beauty. Colors can reveal silent truths about rain, droughts, cold, heat, and more. These are markers for the year of this tree.

They then spend a few final weeks of their growing season revealing everything that identified them that year. They paint the hills with their truths. As humans, we plan color tours to celebrate what the trees tell us. We take photos and get pumpkins while the trees vulnerablely show us who they are. It is this beautiful and painful experience that we as humans witness among the trees around us.

The trees then release their leaves as the winds capture them from the north and west. Little by little, they abandon their year of growth and all their truths. The silhouttes of their branches all revealed themselves in their most naked and naked state. They expect that they have been freed from everything that identified them. Then, instead of choosing to pull new leaves immediately, they rest. They send every ounce of their energy to their roots to dig deeper and stabilize better than the year before. They find new sources of water, they communicate and connect more deeply, and then at the right time, they choose new brands and places to sprout. The flowering process begins again perfectly with bright green buds.

While the process science of how it works is much more complicated, I have come to revere this year for the simplest form of the year in the life of a tree.

Often times I have watched books, podcasts, online courses… you name it to teach me to identify what I see now The greatest teacher of growth and adaptation has been by my side for years.

As a child, I was in love with trees. I found it to be my place of calm. I spent my days going through them. They were my place of endless possibilities. Now, at this point in my life, I have spent more time than usual among them. I used them as guides during this hectic time. I watch them bend to the wind as the storms pass through them. I notice how they give a branch and make a new one in a new direction. Constantly adapting in silent force.

Over the past few months, I have worked with a business advisor to help me navigate the tunnel of change in my career in which I am. The first time we met, I went through a deep grief that I hadn't identified about the downturn in my career right now. He has helped me to work by giving me full permission to be in this chapter of my life. Once I walked through the thick, heavy waters of grief from my old ways, I found myself in a new light opening up to all possibilities. For the first time, I'm really evaluating what success is for me and I'm floundering in accepting it all. I let go of the old ways that I had adopted over the years of my career. I reveal to myself all parts of myself. Each like a leaf where the times of my past have painted me a picture. I recognize him and let him go with the breeze.

These things don't happen in the stillness of a deep session of silence, no, they do happen with chopping onions for dinner and a baby holding onto my leg and trying to walk. They happen as I hold my 4 year old's hand and he lets go as we walk through the fields at sunset on a cool fall day. They happen while I am doing the dishes. They occur when folding laundry. They happen while I'm getting water for the chickens. They happen while I tend the garden and prepare it for winter.

What I'm saying is that we can be in the experience of our lives. We can wade through for a season as we slowly meander through self-discovery. We can be in a gentle state of reflection and openness to ourselves while we are in the most mundane and simple forms of life. I kept thinking that they were going to be that perfect place to process it all in my head, but as I watch the trees and they spin and change again as the routines in life unfold, i realized that I could do the same too.

As the trees are slowly shedding their leaves, I know that one day we will wake up and all we will have left is their trunks and branches. Their most naked self. I feel in myself that I will also have some in the weeks and months to come. I will have identified the things I need right now and let them go. So my plan is not to instantly get the job done and rush into something. Instead, I'm going to expend energy much like trees to root myself deeper, build a solid foundation in a way I've never done before in my career and myself. So just like the trees, I will bloom and start over in a new way at the right time even if I don't know the time yet. It happens. I feel it. But I also feel the importance of sitting here in our naked and most revealed state.

Every year when the trees start this season I find myself in deep reflection and every year I find myself learning new things. This year more than ever, I am counting on the wisdom of the trees to help guide me. I seek to be more deeply in tune with the nature around me and within me so that I can be more open and gentle with the way I see myself and those around me.

The work is big but it is done in small steps. One leaf at a time falling to the ground. Part of the story revealed and brought to light. One more step to open up to something new, so when the time comes, I know how I hope to enter the next chapter in life.

Sometimes it can feel like maintaining a saine lifestyle is an overwhelming challenge that doesn’t fit within the realities of daily life. It’s tough to hold down a full-time travail, eat well, train for a marathon, make homemade green juice, spend quality time with your family/partner, and meditate for an hour each day.

Coffee’s great too, but it’s best to start your day by re-hydrating with a full glass of water. Hydrating first thing in the morning helps to aid absorption, enhance skin health and boost energy.

Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is a simple way to get a little more physical activity in your daily life. It also strengthens and tones your legs and core while you’re at it !

A simple triche for saine eating ( and portion control ) is to make half your plate veggies at each meal. The veggies pack in essential vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients important for health and longevity. And, because they’re rich in fiber, they help to aid assimilation ( aka keep you regular ! ) and keep you feeling full longer.

Using a fitness tracker ( like the Fitbit, Apple Watch or similar ) to track your steps is an easy way to make sure you’re getting enough physical activity each day. We aim for 10, 000 steps daily, which has significant physical and mental health benefits. The Fitbit will also remind you to get 250 steps each hour ( another important measure of health

Conventional household cleaning products are full of harmful chemical ingredients that are not good for our health ( or the health of our kids or pets ! ). Switching to healthier alternatives is a simple way to reduce your exposure to environmental toxins in your home. Similar to cleaning products, conventional skincare and personal care products are formulated with toxic ingredients we should not regularly let absorb into our body’s largest organ. Reduce the toxic burden on your body by switching to non-toxic personal care and beauty products ( see our specific recommendations on deodorant, sunscreen, and green beauty products ).

Aim to eat real food that’s made of whole food ingredients you would have in your own kitchen pantry, or that your grandmother would recognize. ( Yup, this rules out most packaged food, sorry ! ) This is a little different than suggesting you eat only “health foods” ( many of which are increasingly processed ! ). “Real food” includes unprocessed foods like an apple, a cucumber, soybeans or a steak, as well as foods loosely processed from one ( or few ) real-food ingredients, like butter, olive oil, yogurt, tofu, etc. In other words, aim for foods that could be reasonably made in your own kitchen and avoid foods that can only be made in a lab.

Reduce the harmful effects of sitting ( like at your desk travail ) by standing up and moving around for a minute or two every half hour.

Vitamin D is one of the most important nutrients for overall health, and sunlight is one of our best sources of it. Aim to get at least 30 minutes of sunlight each day—preferably in the afternoon, and without sunscreen ( read more about that here ). Not much sunlight in the winter where you live ? It might be worth supplementing with a vitamin D supplement and/or other food sources of this essential nutrient.

Houseplants help to cleanse your indoor air ( sadly, it probably needs it ! ), they’re pretty, and research even shows they improve mood, creativity and problem solving !
