Anyone who has been in fastpitch softball, even for a little while, has seen it - what I call the “bow and arrow” or “Katniss” style of throwing. (Although I will admit the Katniss benchmark performed much better a few years ago.)

The player will bring the glove and throwing hand together, then pull the ball and her elbow back, as if pulling a bowstring, and eventually bring the hand forward, essentially pushing the ball out. of his hand.

A short distance that can work. But if you want to throw hard, or long distance, or both, this casting pattern is not the way to go.

At some point, the hand and the ball should keep moving back past the elbow before they come back and move forward. For some players this can be a challenge.

So, I came up with the little exercise you see here.

Instead of trying to throw the ball forward, the player instead focuses on trying to throw it back. To do this, she can't just pull the ball out like a bowstring. She must let her hand pass her elbow before pushing the ball away.

It's about finding a way to make the player “feel” about what you want them to do in a way that breaks entrenched patterns. Giving her something different to work on - especially something she's unlikely to do otherwise - helps overcome those previous patterns.

One thing to be careful of is not to let the player throw it back as you would for a backhand shot from the floor. It also won't set up a repeatable pattern and could end up replacing one bad habit with another.

Instead, you want the new model to look as close as possible to the result you want. Rolling back will.

If you have a player who is struggling to learn how to catch the ball properly, give it a try. If you have a full team, you can even get them to try and play wrestling this way.

Either way, you'll start them on the path to better throwing patterns.
