If there is one universal trait shared by almost all entrepreneurs and small business owners, these are the hours we keep. We wake up early or fall asleep late - or both (I'm writing this article at 2 a.m.). And most of our waking hours are spent staring at a computer or phone screen.

As a result, many of us - and others who spend a lot of time in front of electronic devices (accountants, writers, graphic designers, to name a few) - suffer from headaches, eyestrain, poor sleeping habits and other illnesses.

Our devices emit high energy blue light, which is believed to be the source of the problems. To filter or filter light, some people are increasingly turning to blue light glasses as a possible solution (this is also an entrepreneurial opportunity). But not everyone thinks these glasses work.

Blocking blue light: does it really help?

In an article on WebMD, the American Academy of Ophthalmology states that we don't need blue light glasses, advises against wearing any kind of special glasses for computer use and adds that blue light does not cause eye strain.

However, in the same article, The Vision Council says "specialized glasses" could indeed reduce eye strain. And the former president of the American Optometric Association said USA today he recommends using blue light glasses to reduce eye strain.

WebMD claims that blue light glasses are not regulated by the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) because they are not marketed as a medical device. Blue light, according to the article, is everywhere, most of it coming from the sun. But our digital devices emit "brighter, shorter wavelength (bluish) light."

Harvard Health Letter cites studies which "suggest [but don’t prove] a link between exposure to light at night [and] diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Studies at Harvard and the University of Toronto show a potential link between exposure to blue light at night and the secretion of melatonin, which can interfere with our sleep cycles. Other research has shown that not getting enough sleep can increase your risk for depression, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems.

Researchers at the University of Toronto suggest that wearing glasses that block blue light prevents disruption of our sleep cycles. WebMD reports on a study conducted by the University of Houston, which found that wearing blue light glasses "showed an increase of about 58% in melatonin levels at night."

While the American Academy of Ophthalmology advises people to "reduce screen time at night" to help reduce eye strain, this may not be practical advice for small business owners working around the clock. A solution suggested in Harvard Health Letter is to "consider wearing anti-blue glasses or installing an app that filters the blue / green wavelength at night." The University of Toronto recommends if you wear blue light glasses, use glasses that block only blue light.

The entrepreneurial opportunity

This is where the entrepreneurial opportunity comes in. According to one Market research report, the global anti-blue light glasses market will grow from $ 22 million in 2020 to $ 38 million by 2024. With that in mind, entrepreneurs Adam Rizza, Dave Weidetz, and Wally Rizza have started their business BLNQ earlier this year.

Do relish in the successful launch of a game-changing product or take pleasure in positive customer feedback. But don’t let your customers hear you banging on about it time after time ! Be alert to the common element that has led to the downfall of countless hitherto thriving brands : complacency. Imaginative, nimble and innovative start-ups often do better than big market leaders that just got lazy. You may be the disruptive innovator today, but tomorrow you could be the complacent market leader with a tired business model. So try to be humble and always strive to improve.
