Several exes hit me in COVID. It's weird what the isolation will do. I caught up Marni Battista - dating expert and relationship coach - to give us some advice on how to deal with it.

We've all heard ... "they keep coming back." Why is that? Maybe it was a guy you hadn't gotten past texting with, or a guy you went on a few dates with… and he ghosted you. Or even a guy who you thought could have been the love of your life.

In the end, you made the decision to get it out of your head, or even out of your heart for good, and now it's back.

Here's what to do and say to find out if he's really that one, and if not, to get him out of your head and heart for good.

1. Realize why it's stuck in your head, reclaim your power, and don't hold hands or initiate if you're feeling lonely or homesick.

First of all, it's important to understand that most unrequited romantic experiences or even men who ghost us feel like incompleteness, even if you felt complete at some point. And so, for most of us, if it didn't end the way you wanted it to, you may have left the relationship flawed. This type of 'I'm imperfect' or 'It's my fault' type of thinking holds your heart hostage and places it in your brain as your ideal partner. It is a mistake! Stop looking for certainty. Trying to feel in control is an ineffective strategy, especially during a time when you are probably feeling out of control in many parts of your life.

2. If he does come back into your life, give him the #datingwithdignity Litmus test.

Is this man committed to his own growth and development, and is he committed to growing your relationship? Invite him on a date with Zoom or Facetime (not just text) and chat to see if your feelings are mutual. Be vulnerable, tell him how you feel and ask him if he feels the same about you right now. Share and find out if you have the same relationship goals, right now. This is an important part of the sunflower test. You must have the same relationship goals right now AND you must be clear and direct in your requests. And finally, if he's committed to his own growth and growing the relationship, are his actions right now consistently demonstrating that?

3. Keep it simple.

This Litmus test is almost foolproof, so make sure you don't over-analyze the situation. If he doesn't even have the conversation, avoids her, sabotages her, wants to have sex first, resorts to the "when-then" tactic. (eg when the pandemic is over, when the economy is more stable, when I don't have my kids, we can talk), it's not him. If you find yourself convincing him of the reasons why you have an amazing relationship and he has concerns and objections and doesn't walk away from them, it's not him! If he passes the Litmus Test, start dating him (and keep dating others) to make sure you keep your mind and heart open to the best match for you versus the one who feels easiest.

4. It is your responsibility to respond appropriately.

You are not faulty, and this incompleteness with it is not because you are faulty or broken. If he failed the Litmus test, end the conversation clearly, reminding yourself of the importance of taking his actions seriously (for example, if the conversation is not going in a timely manner, he has in fact failed. test). Whether you say it or send a written message, something like, “We had a special connection and I'm flattered that you contacted again. Having said that, I'm on track to be a really good place in my life and we're not a game. I am ready for great things and great love in my life. 5. Rinse and repeat.

If an ex sends you a toxic text, you never need to respond. And, if there's someone from your past who has potential, be kind and informative when responding without being too flirtatious. Tell him directly that you are (still) in a place in your life where you are looking for a serious and committed relationship right now, and ask him if he's on the same page. If he is, go out with him (virtually) and give him the litmus test when you start again. Remember that anyone who is NATO (no action, only talk) is not you. Get it out of your head and your heart so that you can make room for the good guy that is.
