Halloween, "It's just a bunch of hocus pocus!" Unless, of course, you're in Salem, Massachusetts. Where you can celebrate Halloween all year round! The best Halloween movie of all time and a cult classic, Hocus Pocus, was filmed here. And it's so easy to go to all the filming locations!

You will feast on seeing up close the places where the Sanderson sisters: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy bewitched the city and sought revenge on a few children and a black cat.

I visited Salem in October and it was absolutely fabulous. Not only did I explore the Hocus Pocus stops on a walking tour I created, but we also learned about the incredible and heartbreaking history of this city. The Salem Witch Trials have captured the attention of all of us. Now people are flocking to Salem, especially around Halloween to experience the magic that this city has to offer.

Salem, Massachusetts continues to be the epicenter of Halloween. And what better way to celebrate than to see where Hocus Pocus filmed some of their most classic scenes. Of course, part of the film was shot in the studio. But the places you can visit haven't changed much since the 1993 film.

Max and his sister Dani are moving from Los Angeles, California to the very different and Halloween-obsessed city of Salem, Massachusetts. He meets a classmate, Allison, whom he dismisses as superstitious until he lights a black flame candle, bringing back the three witches, the Sanderson sisters. With a talking cat, the three children are on a mission to steal the witches' spellbook and prevent them from sucking the lives of the children of Salem in order for them to regenerate.

I will be sharing the filming locations in and around Salem. Most of them are within walking distance of the city center which makes things very easy! I'll share a map that you can use while on the go so you can take a little walk and run amok, amok, amok, amok.

Map with all Hocus Pocus filming locations

Allison's House - The Manor of Ropes

"What do you call them Max? Yabos. This beautiful white house is a must see, even if you are not a fan of the film. This is where Max and Dani come to cheat or treat, then come to his Halloween party before deciding to visit Sanderson Sister's house.

Make sure you walk around and get a good view of the gardens, there is a lovely garden.

The streets here are absolutely beautiful. You can certainly imagine Dani and Max cheating or dealing here. Chestnut Street, one block from Essex Street, is a large street with great houses. A few houses below the Ropes Manor is a house called the "Witches' House". It's a house that would look a lot like a house from the 1630s during the real witch trials.

Halloween Party - Old Town Hall

The iconic scene where Bette Midler puts a “spell on you” was filmed here, the film's most famous musical moment. This place is located in the heart of downtown Salem which makes it even more special. Just walking around town, you might see people disguised as witches no matter what time of year it is.

Make sure to walk up to the Old Town Hall and you'll recognize a few key scenes that are filmed here.

The School - South Washington Square

Here are some scenes from the film. It's the children's school, but it's also where Max makes the Sanderson sisters believe they are burning. You will also recognize the iconic black iron gate. I was lucky enough to see a cat in the window! This is where Sarah says about the school “it's a jail for children”.

If you remember correctly, there was a band of green smoke emanating from the chimney. They filmed night and day scenes here, with the children leaving school during the day. Now just hop across the street for our next film location!

Outdoor Scenes - Salem Common

When Allison refuses Max and returns her grade after school, you'll find that they were in Salem Common. There is also a beautiful gazebo in the middle of the park. It is a great place to take a walk or have a picnic. Or, like Max, you can ride a bike!

Sit on the bench where Allison and Max are talking or just enjoy this lovely park. Very close to the town, you will see the Salem Witch Museum, another great place to learn about the history of Salem.

Thackery Binx was born in the 1600s and the style of these old wooden structures corresponds to this era. You can just imagine a witch hanged or burnt at the stake here. The opening scenes were filmed here. I also think they found inspiration for the Sanderson Sister house. The Witches' House was filmed in a studio.

Be sure to check the hours for Openings of Old Salem Pioneer Village. Even though it is closed, you can still see it from the outside.

Dani & Max House - 4 Ocean Ave

Not only is it their home, it's exactly what a typical Massachusetts home looks like. You can still see the attic bedroom tower from here where the Sanderson sisters took Dani on their brooms. Remember, this is someone's private home, so be respectful!

You'll have to drive here from the city center, but it's worth seeing the iconic house. It was also there that they filmed the cheaters attracted to Sarah's song for "come little children".

The Cemetery - Old Burial Hill, Marblehead

As soon as you see the hill, you'll recognize that Max is being bullied here and having his cross-trainers stolen. Technically, it's not in Salem. But New England as a whole is so small and it's only about 15 minutes from the city.

It's not just a filming location, it's one of New England's oldest cemeteries. This hill was established in 1638 as a meeting house where 600 revolutionary heroes and several pastors were buried at the top of the hill.

BONUS: Not only did they film the cemetery scenes here, Max is seen riding a bike here as well. This region is beautiful with typical New England houses.

Walking around Salem makes you feel like you are in the Hocus Pocus movie. Take a look at these amazing decorations in a house near the city center:

It's not Halloween without some Hocus Pocuses, which is why seeing these film locations come to life makes it all the more special. So have fun and enjoy it!
