All football fans will experience the “Super Bowl hangover”. The San Francisco 49ers look like the last NFL team to be hit by this curse. Indeed, the NFC champions found themselves at the bottom of the NFC West with a rather unsatisfactory record of 4-6.
The 49ers have just been beaten 27-13 by the New Orleans Saints. This followed two recent losses to the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers, and now there is a sense of panic at Levi's Stadium. The last time the 49ers suffered from a Super Bowl hangover was in 2015 when the team sacked head coach Jim Harbaugh after falling to a disastrous 5-11 season.
It's still too early to say whether current coach Kyle Shanahan will suffer the same fate, but it's clear that things need to change quickly if the 49ers have any hope of reaching a playoff berth. NFC West is known to be the toughest division in the NFL. The Seattle Seahawks managed to repeat their impressive form from last season. Additionally, the Arizona Cardinals look like a reborn team as seen in their 24-20 win over the 49ers in Game 1 of the season. (Not to mention the thrilling Cards victory on Sunday thanks to this incredible Hail Mary.)
The 49ers' next games don't look easy. They face off against divisional rival LA Rams at the end of the month, before meeting the in-shape Buffalo Bills in early December. So what issues do the 49ers need to tackle before these massive games?
Injuries affecting the 49ers defense
Much of the 49ers' success last season was based on the strength of their defense. Certainly, the Niners' defense managed to put in a solid performance this time around. The best proof of that came when they all but silenced the New England Patriots to a 33-6 loss in early October.
But with big embarrassments such as a 43-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins improving quickly, it looks like the defense just isn't as consistent as it was last time around.
Much of the blame will be on defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, but the large number of injuries sustained by key defensive players should not be ignored. While San Francisco appears to be able to shut down most teams' running play, big questions remain about the effectiveness of the team's passing rush with the current injury situation.
Is Garoppolo the problem?
If there is to be a player who is to blame for the 49ers' relatively dismal record, he must be Jimmy garoppolo. The quarterback is generally thought to be below the standards for a team of the caliber of the 49ers, and it looks like his confidence is slipping with below-par performance.
But there are more questions in the offense. Granted, the absence of all-star backer Raheem Mostert hit the team hard, but the addition of a quality wide receiver would certainly help a San Francisco team that has become too reliant on the run. All of this means that time is running out for the 49ers to solve their problems.
