WWE Hall of Famer "Bullet" Bob Armstrong has died of bone cancer. He was 80 years old.

1939-2020 (80 years)

Fans say wrestlers are legitimate badass, but Bob Armstrong was double-tough before entering the square circle, serving as a Navy and Firefighter before becoming one of the Territory Age's best babyfaces.

Double hard

James Melton James was born October 3, 1939 and loved to watch professional wrestling with his father. The man who would become known as Bob Armstrong served in the Marines and was stationed in Korea.

After serving in the Marines, Armstrong became a firefighter, but had been bitten by the wrestling virus and entered the game of grappling in 1963. By 1970 Armstrong was wrestling full time.

Typically working as a babyface, Bob Armstrong boasted of a powerful physique and had the right mix of harshness and humility that made him the perfect babyface in the days of the Territory.

It was in the 1970s that the Armstrong star began to rise while wrestling in Georgia and later in Championship Wrestling Florida.

Armstrong won a number of singles and tag team titles in the Territories and won a title against world heavyweight champion NWA Jack Brisco, to come but still looking like a champion.

Armstrong's mix of brawling moves and martial arts gave him an eclectic style and fans applauded when he spoke of "lifting the jaws of opponents."

A regional favorite

Bob Armstrong continued to work in the Territories until the 1980s, competing with some of wrestling's biggest stars including "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, Ted DiBiase and Ric Flair.

Armstrong kept himself in a ring shape through a rigorous weightlifting regimen, but his pumping iron nearly ended his life when his weight bench broke, dropping 180 pounds on his face. Armstrong required extensive plastic surgery, but like any true professional wrestler, he incorporated the injury into a storyline, donning a mask and claiming an opponent had injured him.

Armstrong's masked identity "The Bullet" has become an important aspect of his career.

A long half-retreat

Bob Armstrong stopped competing full time in 1988, but his career was far from over. He served as Jim Cornette's Smokey Mountain Wrestling commissioner and continued to wrestle part-time and occasionally manage.

On May 11, 2019, “Bullet” Bob played his last game, defeating the Assassin at the age of 79.

Armstrong's sons inducted him into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011, a well-deserved tribute for an exceptional career.

Death of Bob Armstrong

Armstrong's toughness was legendary, and this story should give you an idea of just how. According to Dave Meltzer:

"When he [Armstrong] was in his sixties, due to a combination of damage from decades of bumps and heavy loads, he lost control of the little finger in one of his hands. This prevented him from grabbing dumbbells and lifting enough weight to make him happy. No problem, he just cut off their finger so he could get a better grip.
