Does your work involve sustainability? Do you have pain on the outside of your thighs and legs? If so, it is possible that you have meralgia parasthetica.

Meralgia parasthetica is the entrapment of a nerve that runs through the outside of the thigh. Pregnancy often results in compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh, which makes standing and movement difficult. Some people have a habit of wearing a tight waistband and clothing that restrict nervous space. There may be a sharp throbbing pain, burning sensation, tingling, and numbness on the outer side of the thighs and legs. If this continues to exist, it can lead to weakness in the thigh muscles. If you are having this problem, you should meet with your doctor for a further examination.


Simple tests are available to confirm nerve compression. As tapping on the path of the nerve can make symptoms worse. Other investigations include x-ray to rule out any conflict, nerve conduction test, electromyography. Based on the severity of the compression treatment is performed. Treatment includes:

  1. Elongation: Exercises like stretches for the thigh and leg muscles are extremely helpful in reducing nerve entrapment. These stretches should be done twice a day and each stretch should last about 10 seconds at least
  1. Traction: It is an effective way to create a distraction between the bones. This helps relieve compression of the nerve and helps resolve symptoms.

  1. Joint manipulation and mobilization: Techniques like joint mobilization improve joint flexibility and help save the stuck nerve. Techniques like Kinesio taping are a specialized taping procedure that is done to reduce pain, create space for the nerve, and ease muscle weakness. Once the pain and discomfort has reduced, you can focus on strengthening exercises.
  1. Strengthening exercises: It includes training with dumbbells, weight cuffs, elastic bands, etc. Simple gymnastics can also improve muscle strength. However, these exercises should be planned by your physiotherapist because they are personalized.

  1. Cryotherapy: The Cryo pack applied two to three times a day for 5 to 10 minutes has been shown to be effective in relieving pain.

If symptoms are severe and do not go away with physiotherapy, surgery is done that targets nerve resection. Physiotherapy sessions are also beneficial after surgical treatment. Simple solutions like frequent changes of positions, repeated stretching are really helpful.
