So you've identified the areas of your skin that you would like to improve, you've bought all the fad products, but now what? How to layer the products and apply them to be the most effective? Side note, if you haven't figured out how to get started with a routine, I recommend checking out this article on to start and that one!

When applying the products, we want to keep in mind two things: the function of the product in relation to the skin and the product pH level and how that will ultimately affect its effectiveness.

A while ago I was chatting with a girl who was so disappointed with Drunk Elephant's C-Firma, one of my holy grails, because she was convinced it just wasn't effective. After talking about her routine, it appeared that she applied it after cleansing, hyaluronic acid, and then mixed it with her moisturizer and sunscreen ... she was unknowingly making it completely ineffective by increasing no only the pH of his skin, but also the pH of the product so much that he could not work properly. The pH plays a major role in the effectiveness of products.

Correct product layering is also related to pH and efficiency and for that we have a product layering guide. Please note that, as with anything else skin care, there will be nuances which I will explain at the bottom of this article. If not all of the products are applicable to you, don't worry, the order will remain the same no matter if any products are removed.

In general, the product overlay should look like this:

Things to keep in mind:

  • This listing represents both AM and PM products, personally I would not use vitamin C and AHA / BHA acids in the same routine, I would save AHA / BHA for the night.
  • You will want to wait around 15 minutes after applying vitamin C serums or acidic / chemical exfoliators as they depend on the pH level of the skin to be effective. For this reason, if you're new to chemical exfoliators and need to make a product softer (think Drunk Elephant's TLC Glycolic Serum or Glossier's Solution), you can always apply after a moisturizing toner or a first essence.
  • Just because you are using a washable mask does not mean that you are going to “wash off” previously applied chemical exfoliators. As long as you've waited around 15 minutes, the products will already be absorbed and put to work.
  • Some products will have a dual purpose, for example, regular glycolic toner is an * active * toner. This means that it will lower your pH level, but also provide a form of chemical exfoliation.

You know the basics — drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, and wash your face, but what about everything in between ?
