It is our ritual to start our lessons with a question to our students: Use one word to describe the most important thing you want to take out of our class. We write a list of these words on a blackboard: attentive, energetic, flexible, lean, etc. It's usually an interesting list filled with physical, mental, or spiritual qualities that people need to function well in the world. Then we juxtapose them with the antonyms, which reveal what they are missing. They feel scattered, slow, stiff, overweight. This word makes them focus on what they will master first. The focus takes them out of their comfort zone where they are already defined, even if it's in a way they don't like. There are as many words as there are people in a group, and there is always variation due to the range of what people feel is missing to have a good life. And you have to commit to the word you choose. So if you really want to see yourself as a conscious person, you have to pursue a practice that will change you dramatically. You cannot be just "a little" aware.

There is a slight difference between a dreamer and a visionary, and it is in the eyes: the former closes them in fantasy while the latter keeps them wide open. The worst place to be is knowing what to do but lacks the courage to put in the effort. Courage can mean different things to different people. For one, it might be skydiving, but for another, it might change their diet, give up unhealthy foods they love. So you have to become your own hero, jump into unfamiliar and sometimes very uncomfortable territory.

We all have a hero within us, but we also have a coward. If you look really closely you can see that a coward can be a fatalist in disguise, frozen, looking away from what is going on around them, feeling incapable or missing. They wait for others to take action or for an outside hero to change their situation, hoping they will be lucky. On the other hand, there are people who are aware of their own inner cowardice, but they act anyway - make their own luck. They may fail, but they get the satisfaction of knowing they've tried, which is always heroic.

To tip the balance between hero and coward, it's always important to remember the wisdom of taking small steps forward towards your goal. Once you have chosen that word to describe the quality you want to achieve, you are clear about your intention and the work that needs to be done. Even when you feel hopeless or frustrated, if you keep putting one foot in front of the other in pursuit of the desired outcome, you are still on your way. Firmness is a hero's quality, and sometimes it just takes a little extra patience and commitment to step out of the coward's shoes and pick up the hero's cape.
