Before you start looking for cockroach milk to pour over your cornflakes, there are a few things you should know.

For starters, this frenzy was based on an obscure 2016 study from India. It was in the news at the time and for some reason the coverage started again.

But this study was to benefit cockroaches, not humans. Scientists even say they're not sure cockroach milk is safe for human consumption. This is not even the subject of this study.

Still, the news has gone viral.

No, it's not the "new obsession with health" like Marie Claire ad.

It was a study. And again, the search results are misinterpreted and used to create sensational headlines. You can't even buy this stuff, but the stories make it sound like cockroach milk is flying away.

This is not the case.

It is true that insects are increasingly seen as a potential source of sustainable protein, and new products are introduced - mainly cricket meal nutrition the bars. Gourmet Grubb is frequently cited in cockroach milk stories, but this South African company's “entom milk” is made from farmed insects and is not cockroach milk. The Cape Town company makes ice cream from this entomilk, and it has caught the attention of food technology, but the product is not even on the market yet. Media coverage has therefore even misunderstood.
