In his latest work, British artist and photographer Marcus Lyon chose 100 Detroiters through which to tell the story of Detroit. Using a blend of portrait photography, profile, technology and ancestral DNA, i.Detroit - A human atlas of an American city is a research-based, people-driven exploration of the city.

The Kresge Foundation got wind of a similar project that Lyon had carried out in Brazil and wanted to commission and finance a project here. “I mean, it was a pretty easy 'yes',” said Lyon. “I have always been deeply fascinated by the city, really from a young age. I think a lot (of that was) driven by the musicality of your city, but also just kind of a feeling that it was somewhere that I needed to figure out.

Lyon found that many of the Detroiters he had approached for the project had their guards in place, ready to defend our humble city. Why should they trust him to tell our stories accurately? What makes him different from all the other misguided foreigners who made up their minds about Detroit before they even landed?

“When we listened to this, we had every intention of telling the right story in the right way,” says Lyon. "That seemed like the only way it was going to be something we would be proud of as a job." Lyon and his team bonded with musician and Detroit native L'Renee Hollins, who acted as a local guide, accompanying them through most of the production on the pitch. “She has helped us navigate so many different areas of the city - geographically but also emotionally.”

The atlas opens with a handful of essays by prominent Detroit residents, including former city councilor JoAnn Watson. The main section is where you'll find the profiles for each of the 100 I.Detroiters - Rashida Tlaib, Satori Shakoor, George N'Namdi - who include their portraits.

Scan a photo with I.Detroit and that will activate a soundtrack of that person telling their story. Also in each person's section is a DNA map of their journey, with a breakdown of their ancestral origins, and a map of their birth and life in Detroit.
