All uses relate to business-oriented advice and services.
Music consulting research returns a mix of results, for most small businesses and individuals who primarily market to artists. No single entity stands out, as in the global management consulting industry, which boasts multi-billion dollar companies like Mckinsey, Boston Consulting Group and Deloitte, and a 2019 market value of 160 billion dollars. Without an industry leader, coupled with the understanding that creative markets like music don't use career development services, we understand why this market has remained underutilized.
Impact of Covid-19
The pandemic has leveled the playing field, with many artists and music professionals losing a substantial portion of their income for the foreseeable future. Although some efforts, including several funds focused on musicians and LiveNation Crew Nation Funding, providing temporary assistance, many of those working in the live event space have been forced to take odd jobs or collect unemployment. With an estimate 5 million people working in arts and entertainment in the United States, 34% of whom are self-employed, the uncertainty surrounding the return of live entertainment combined with the ongoing debate around future stimulus bills makes this time difficult for many.
With so many music and entertainment professionals in need, why aren't they looking more to monetize their time, knowledge and experience? What are the current issues in the market and what solutions can help generate alternative income? What value can consulting offer to creative industries like music?
Over 100 people were interviewed while researching this article, including industry professionals who would volunteer their time, in addition to potential buyer segments of musicians, entrepreneurs (usually early in their careers) , students, educators and parents of all of the above.
The ethical dilemma
The ethics of whether or not to pay for advice is still widely debated. Many question the validity of the information source, while others question the resulting results and even the size of the market. On the other hand, creative industries like music are full of professionals and companies offering paid services, in addition to paid ways to connect with musicians, such as VIP dating. There may be an ethical approach to providing transparent and accountable services to both mentors and consultants, such as using a third-party applicant verification service and requiring minimal experience and career milestones. Unpaid mentoring can also be a way for someone to provide value to their industry while removing the ethical debate about paying for someone's time. In addition to gaining perspective, mentoring and counseling can lead to networking and career opportunities, providing value to everyone involved.
For those interested in receiving compensation, many questioned the value of their consultation time. Without any market pricing context from other music or industry professionals, the conceptual prices offered tended to be significantly lower than those of non-entertainment consultants, while also being much lower than others. industry-related services, in particular those involving a physical presence. This raises several questions: Does a service have more value than your point of view and does it offer your point of view in the learning environment of a counseling session unlike any other service? When asked if they were paid to train other employees and / or clients on the job, all said yes (if applicable), highlighting an obvious disconnect between counseling and education.
Many professionals also wondered where there was a market interest in paying for consultations. In the mixed sample of musicians, entrepreneurs, students, educators and parents, the response has been consistently positive, ranging from helping to pursue an existing career to exploring around the launch of a new one. The latter was a major topic for parents of high school students who expressed an interest in going to college for a career in music, which has always been a point of contention. For a parent, the ability to talk to someone who is successful could alleviate risks and worries - a decision that could have a huge impact on a student's education and career path.
While professional counseling may not be the one-size-fits-all solution for the music and entertainment industry, it certainly seems like a solution to consider, especially in today's Covid-19 landscape. Despite the ongoing ethical debate, the market seems to be showing interest, especially with a sense of responsibility.

Be alert to the common element that has led to the downfall of countless hitherto thriving brands : complacency. Imaginative, nimble and innovative start-ups often do better than big market leaders that just got lazy. You may be the disruptive innovator today, but tomorrow you could be the complacent market leader with a tired model. So try to be humble and always strive to improve. Seek inspiration from other entrepreneurs, from books and from seminars. The moment you think ‘mission accomplished’ is the same moment you become vulnerable to being usurped.
