The great St. Patrick’s Day weekend ice storm of 1997

The recent extreme weather event in Texas, where the entire power grid almost shut down, reminded me of a similar (but much less threatening) ice storm that occurred in Michigan in 1997. I thought of caption this “Little house on the meadow with wheelchairs”. I’m sure there were a lot of Texans who had a similar experience, trying to survive with disabled or medically fragile family members who kept on needing care and support just because everything what depended on electricity stopped working. Here’s how the National Weather Service described the 1997 ice storm: “… From Detroit and Ann Arbor… Read More »The great St. Patrick’s Day weekend ice storm of 1997

Bring on the Farce! Another Disappointing Weekend of Boxing – Jersey George’s Boxing Blog

Robinson Conceicao loses controversial decision in fight against PED scandal This fight has been a huge black eye for boxing which as a sport is in dire straits. Oscar Valdez, the reigning 130-pound WBC champion, tested positive before the fight for the banned substance Phentermine. Rather than strip the champion whose A and B samples tested positive, the WBC kept him as champion and the fight moved forward anyway. The small punishment Valdez received was the handing over of a twelve month probationary period, which is tantamount to being punished for any dirty tests over the next year or so.… Read More »Bring on the Farce! Weekend Betting Angle – Fury-Wilder III

IBHOF inductee and boxing expert Graham Houston assesses Saturday night’s massive heavyweight clash between WBC King Tyson Fury and bitter rival Deontay Wilder at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder both hit their heaviest for tonight’s heavyweight title fight in Las Vegas, Wilder 238 pounds, Fury 277, although in reality they would have weighed quite a bit. less without jogging pants and sneakers (and, in Fury’s holster, a tank top and a black hat). But the point is, they’re two tall men who carry a lot of weight. It is debatable how much all this weight… Read More »Weekend Betting Angle – Fury-Wilder III

Fury KOs Wilder, Kownacki DQed, Boesel, Smith, Cunningham Win, weekend recap By Robert Brizel, Chief Correspondent of Real Combat Media Boxing Las Vegas, NV (October 10, 2021) – Deontay Wilder has gone back to chasing heads with his right hand. Twice he let Tyson Fury down. Overall, Fury tore Wilder apart by the numbers. Weekend reading: Selling salad in China

Xavier Naville. The Lettuce Diaries: How a Frenchman found gold to grow vegetables in China. Earnshaw Books, 2021. The press officer for this offbeat book sent it to me and I must admit I was charmed by it. The French author started out in international business catering, managing canteens in 70 countries for the Compass group and based in Paris. At 27, almost on a whim, he went to Shanghai to sell salads to the Chinese (who don’t eat salads) and oversee vegetable production for KFC and other fast food outlets. He was ignorant of Chinese language and culture, to… Read More »Weekend reading: Selling salad in China

I’m glad to see that the USDA’s Economic Research Service is back to work and is recovering somewhat from its forced move to Kansas City. I was particularly interested to see this report: Food-related water use in the United States varies by food category, stage in the supply chain, and eating habits. It has three main conclusions: The US food system, which provides the majority of food and drink purchased in the country, requires about a third of the nation’s total freshwater use. Agricultural production uses more than half of water for food, while later stages of the supply chain… Read More »Weekend reading: the food system and water use

Ryder Cup and Laver Cup set to begin this weekend

Drawing: Getty Images A little off the beaten track, especially at this time of year, but this weekend sees two international competitions on these shores. First up is the Ryder Cup, which is fun for non-golfers as anyone can enjoy watching stuffy butt golfers have their sphincter tighter than a snare when playing for something else. than someone else’s money. It’s a rare phenomenon, almost exclusive to the Ryder Cup. Almost always Team Europe is filled with guys you’ve barely heard of, and maybe a big champion or two, if that’s the case. Fun Family Activities to Spice Up Your Weekend

Over the past year, we’ve spent a lot of family time at home, reinventing the wheel of ways to stay busy and have fun. Weekend Open Thread – Corporette.com

Something bothering you? Talk about it here. I was browsing the scarves at Nordstrom and found myself drawn to this McQueen scarf. Isn’t that the perfect extra layer as fall approaches? McQueen skulls are obviously a classic at this point, but they also look like some kind of adorable Halloween nod. By the way, isn’t it fun to see how modern items become classics – they are successful, they are trendy, and after a few years you start to think: style soon. I remember thinking about McQueen scarves a long time ago, almost 10 years ago. (Here is a post… Read More »Weekend Open Thread – Corporette.com

Weekend reading: Immunity, Covid-19, and Generally Good Health

A reader, Philly Nassau, sent me the ingredient list for several “immune boosting” supplements, in quotes because I am a skeptic of supplements in general, and immune supplements in particular (I prefer to eat healthy and stay active). Immune supplements claim to be “nootropic and brain supplements for memory, brain support, clarity, focus, mood enhancement, anti-anxiety, and stress relief.” Nootropics? These are defined as drugs or supplements capable of improving memory, concentration or other cognitive functions and preventing cognitive decline. As I wish. But first, science. Diets targeted to the gut microbiota modulate human immune status. “The data highlight how… Read More »Weekend reading: Immunity, Covid-19, and Generally Good Health

Who Wins The Big Showdown This Weekend? — Boxing News

After an average summer of boxing, we start the fall season with a big heavyweight showdown this Saturday. At the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, UK, Anthony Joshua will defend his WBA, IBF and WBO titles against former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. Femme Luxe: Weekend Fall Wardrobe Capsule in Shades of Rust

Over the past few weeks, I’ve revamped my wardrobe and put together some different looks as the weather cooled and fall slowly set in. For this fall, I considered sporting a rust color palette based on this rust on iron color scheme. Five colors are included in this color palette which includes Caput Mortuum, Deep Dumpling, Rust, Antique Brass, and Ruddy Brown. Juventus failed to maintain their 1-0 lead to draw with AC Milan in Turin on Sunday, in a hotly contested affair. The new NFL season is now on and we’ve taken a look at which teams have been the winners and the losers in the first round of matches. Pittsburgh Steelers – Winners The Steelers (3/1 to win AFC North) produced one of the first-round shocks, coming in 10 points to beat defending AFC East champions the Buffalo Bills 23-16 on the road. As you may know from reading my blog on a separate period of time, I like pro wrestling a bit.
