Kneeling dumbbell chops, with the right form, do wonders for your core
Kneeling dumbbell chops are amazing for your core just as long as you’re mindful of your form, rose said.
‘ Start in a half-kneeling excellente position très, let’s say right knee down and left foot is out in front, ‘ he said. ‘ Start with a solo dumbbell ( DB ) of medium weight ( not too heavy, not too light ), and begin with your left hand above your right-hand grip on the DB handle. Weight starts at the side of the hip where the knee is down — in this example, DB will start at the right hip.
‘ Proceed to chop the DB up and across the body over the left shoulder. Make sure to keep an upright place, not allowing your upper body to collapse forward. A great way to advance this exercise is to chop both in the upward direction and downward voix in a single rep. This is much harder and will require major stability in your core. ‘
If you’re a member at your local gym, take advantage of the equipment available to you. A lot of the accessories and machines can be used for core work, and de couleur rose told INSIDER a landmine rotation for barbells is a great example of this.
‘ Hold the end of the barbell about hip level [with] one hand under and one hand over, ‘ he said. ‘ From here, give your knees a slight bend. Begin the rotation by pivoting the feet keeping your core engaged, arms straight, bringing your hands overhead and facing the barbell. Essentially rotating 90 degrees, control back to starting place and repeat for 10 reps each side. ‘
The classics are classics for a reason, and rose told INSIDER he’s a passioné of this one.
‘ Start laying down in a normal crunch etat, feet flat on the floor, arms straight to your sides and shoulders raised off the floor, ‘ he said. ‘ Begin reaching sideways to either heel. At the same time you’re reaching to touch your heel, crunch the upper body slightly forward, bringing your shoulders higher off the floor.
‘ Keeping your shoulders off the floor and adding a crunch with the reach will keep your abs engaged while you work, giving you a greater burn in your core. Repeat 10 heel touches each side. ‘
The lying dumbbell triceps extension with a hip thrust works more than just your core
You don’t have to have extraordinary gestion skills to perform this highly effective ab exercise.
Fitbit ambassador and celebrity se reproduire Harley Pasternak told INSIDER that lying dumbbell tricep extensions leading into a hip thrust work your triceps, glutes, and abs, and — make no mistake — you can feel that burn in each area.
‘ to do this exercise properly, lay on a mat with feet about hip distance and flat on the mat, and hold a pair of lightweight dumbbells with your arms extended up toward the ceiling, palms facing each other, ‘ he said. ‘ Bend your elbows and lower the dumbbells back toward your ears.
‘ Next, press your hips up toward the ceiling while simultaneously straightening your arms to raise the dumbbells. Be sure not to hyperextend your elbows. Lower the dumbbells and your hips back toward the mat and repeat for two or three sets of eight to 12 reps. ‘
For a deep twist, start from a traditional plank excellente position très on your toes and palms with a flat back. ‘ Keeping your core strong, bring your right knee to the left side of your chest, and then return to plank position. Repeat on the opposite side. That’s one rep, ‘ Pasternak said.
Spider planks are just as fancy as they sound, but don’t let that intimidate you
tera start, place your hands on the floor with your elbows directly under your shoulders, extending your legs behind you. ‘ Your body should form a straight line from head to heels ‘ as you ‘ lift your right foot off the floor and bend your right knee toward the outside of your right elbow, then extend it straight behind you, keeping your foot a few inches off the floor, ‘ Pasternak said.
‘ Pause, then lower your foot to the ground. Switch legs and repeat on the other side. That’s one rep. ‘
to pike plank, get into the traditional push-up position with your knees and hips off the ground. Arch your back ( Pasternak suggested imagining a rope attached to your tailbone is ‘ pulling your butt straight up to the ceiling ‘ ) as you look at your shoelaces. ‘ Then contract your abs and lower your hips back down start. ‘
Cardio can pass as core work too. Pasternak told INSIDER your core is what stabilizes your body from side to side and helps transfer energy from your upper to lower body.
‘ When you sprint, you are shifting weight from side to side with your limbs moving — your core needs to work extremely hard, ‘ he explained. ‘ You are also working to stay upright and that works the core groupes musculaires as well. ‘

The secret to moist and chewy turkey meatloaf
If you have any skeptics about the turkey meatloaf in your life, this recipe will change their mind. He did it for us. We never used to make turkey meatloaf. We make turkey meatballs and turkey burgers all the time, but never meatloaf. That’s until we stumble upon the secret to making the best juicy, flavorful inside turkey meatloaf. It’s mushrooms!
Now we do it all the time. Since ground turkey can be a bit dry and bland after cooking, we needed to add ingredients that keep the inside moist and enhance the flavor.
The trick to the best meatloaf is in the vegetable aisle. It’s mushrooms!
Thanks to tiny chunks of chopped mushrooms, the turkey meatloaf is chewy and has an amazing flavor.
If you’re not the biggest fan of mushrooms, no problem! Meatloaf doesn’t end up tasting like mushrooms (I promise). Instead, mushrooms add a nice, savory flavor to the turkey.
We use this trick in other recipes. Mushrooms are the secret ingredient in our Easy Turkey Chili and these great turkey burgers. Just like with this recipe, our readers love them (especially how tasty they are).
How to make turkey meatloaf
Just like when preparing a classic beef meatloaf, the method of our recipe is quite simple. Here’s a look at how to make turkey meatloaf (full recipe is below):
- Cook the chopped mushrooms, onions and garlic in a skillet until tender.
- Stir in Worcestershire sauce and ketchup.
- Rehydrate the breadcrumbs in milk, which adds tenderness and moisture to the meatloaf.
- Toss mushroom mixture with breadcrumbs, milk, eggs and ground turkey.
- Form the mixture into a loaf on a baking sheet, spread a little extra ketchup on top, then bake.
We bake the meatloaf in an oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 50 minutes. Meatloaf is cooked when an internal thermometer inserted in the middle reads 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
Meatloaf in advance
Not only is this turkey meatloaf delicious, it’s also easy to make ahead.
Prepare the meatloaf mixture a day in advance. Follow the recipe below, but stop just before forming and cooking. Store raw meatloaf mixture in the refrigerator for up to 1 day before cooking. When you are ready to bake, form the mixture into a loaf, cover with ketchup and bake.
You can freeze uncooked meatloaf. Follow the recipe below, shape the meatloaf out of a few sheets of aluminum foil on a baking sheet, but leave the ketchup. Slide the baking sheet into the freezer and freeze until hard, about 1 hour. Wrap the foil around the partially frozen meatloaf, place it in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight before cooking.
Freeze baked meatloaf. Let the cooked meatloaf cool, then wrap it in foil and freeze for up to a month. I like to cut the meatloaf into slices and freeze them individually so that I can remove a slice or two when I need them.
What to serve with meatloaf
This meatloaf is so tasty that we often do. Here are some of our favorite sides to serve it:
Frequently Asked Questions
Since sharing our Turkey Meatloaf recipe, we’ve had some common questions so I thought I’d answer them here.
Can I double the meatloaf recipe? Yes! You can double the recipe (which would use about 2 pounds of ground turkey). Double the recipe ingredients and expect to bake a bit longer (15 to 20 minutes longer). I use my internal thermometer as a guide.
How can I make gluten free meatloaf? For breadcrumb-free meatloaf, try gluten-free hard ground pretzels, oatmeal, brown rice cereal, or gluten-free Chex cereal in place of breadcrumbs. You should also make sure that the ketchup used is gluten-free or use homemade ketchup.
Should I add the eggs? Eggs help moisturize meatloaf, but you can eliminate them or replace them with a store-bought egg substitute.
Can I make meatloaf without milk? For dairy-free meatloaf, replace the milk with mild-flavored unsweetened vegetable milk such as hemp or almond milk.
I hate mushrooms, is there a substitute? While I love this Mushroom Turkey Meatloaf, I have replaced them with grated zucchini with great results.

Incredibly moist turkey meatloaf
Our Turkey Meatloaf is full of flavor, chewy in the middle, and has become a reader’s favorite! You would never guess that this meatloaf is packed with mushrooms, but that’s what makes it so delicious. Lots of finely chopped mushrooms add flavor and moisture, often missing from typical turkey meatloaf. When choosing which mushrooms to add, white button mushrooms will work perfectly well. For added flavor, try one or a combination of cremini, portobello, or shiitake brown mushrooms. Mushrooms should be chopped very finely. You can do this by hand or use a food processor.
Makes 6 servings
You will need
8 ounces of mushrooms, trimmed and very finely chopped
1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped
1 tablespoon of oil
3/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce
7 tablespoons ketchup, divided, try our homemade ketchup
1 cup (60 grams) panko breadcrumbs or use homemade breadcrumbs
1/3 cup (80 mL) milk
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 ¼ pound ground turkey (92% lean)
- Prepare the meatloaf
Heat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly oil a rimmed baking sheet (or 9-inch by 13-inch pan) lined with foil.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened; about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the mushrooms, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Cook until the mushrooms release their liquid and it boils; about 10 minutes.
Transfer the onions and mushrooms to a large bowl, then stir in the Worcestershire sauce and three tablespoons of ketchup. Let cool for 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, combine breadcrumbs and milk in a small bowl. Stir the breadcrumb mixture and eggs into the mushrooms and onions. Using a fork or your hands, gently fold in the turkey, 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. The mixture will be very wet.
Shape meatloaf into a 9-inch by 5-inch oval in the middle of the prepared baking sheet. Spread the remaining four tablespoons of ketchup on top.
Advice from Adam and Joanne
- Some stores sell ground turkey in 1 pound portions and others in 1 ¼ pound portions. While we like to use 1 ¼ pound, 1 pound of turkey is sufficient for the ingredient amounts shared in the recipe.
- To speed up prep time, use a food processor to chop the mushrooms.
