Owen Hart’s life came to an end far too soon and his wife sought justice. She sued WWE with a wrongful death lawsuit, but Vince McMahon doesn’t start a lawsuit without a fight of his own.
Martha Hart said on Talk Is Jericho that she had fought with the WWE Legal Team. Then she revealed that WWE had actually sued her for breaching Owen Hart’s contract. “It was the craziest thing because they had in their contract that you could only sue them in Connecticut.” I wasn’t suing them about Owen Hart’s contract, it was totally different [wrongful death lawsuit], but through this process of the trial, they were trying anything and everything to cover their tracks and intimidate me, so they were throwing everything at me.
Martha said WWE has also “Manipulated Owen’s family” and shot the legal process. She commented on how deep pockets WWE can pay lawyers forever. Owen Hart’s widow said they had to have a judge there just to give depositions because their lawyers were so angry with each other. Then McMahon filed a lawsuit against Martha Hart in the middle of it all.
“Then Vince sued me because he wanted the case transferred to Connecticut, because in Missouri you are entitled to punitive damages, but in Connecticut you are not.” He was so worried like, ‘Oh my god, there’s so much neglect here that punitive damages are going to be like through the roof.’ So he sued me, which was really tough because I had to hire attorneys in Connecticut to fight this lawsuit as I fought the wrongful death lawsuit in Kansas City.
She said the rest of the Hart family were also working against her. “It was horrible,” recalls Martha Hart. She recalled that Vince McMahon was using whatever tactics he could against her. Martha Hart wanted to speed up the legal process, but WWE continued to drag its feet. Then her lawyer told her to put an amount on the table that they rejected, but interest started to build up, which prompted WWE to speed up the process.
Martha Hart wanted to sue WWE. Then his lawyer told him that in the end it would come down to money because “no one is going to jail”. Martha Hart decided that “I will create my own justice”. It was then that she created the Owen Hart Foundation.
