Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian criticized the international community for its inaction in the face of oppressive US sanctions against the Iranian people, calling for concertation efforts to counter inhumane measures.
“The oppressive US sanctions are an inhuman act and a blatant form of terrorism against the Iranian people which must be rejected and fought by all,” Amir-Abdollahian said in a meeting with the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer, Wednesday in New York on the sidelines of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
In May 2018, former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from a UN-approved nuclear deal, which he had signed as a member of the P5 + 1 group with Tehran in 2015, and sparked a campaign of “maximum pressure” against Iran.
In response, Iran announced corrective measures, reducing some of its commitments under the agreement, while maintaining that the measures were “reversible” based on the actions of other signatories.
US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley admitted that the maximum pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic had “failed miserably” and “damaged US interests.”
Highlighting the current humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, Amir-Abdollahian described the unremitting efforts of Iranian diplomatic missions in the war-torn country in recent weeks, and called for international assistance to help alleviate the humanitarian situation there. low.
“In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and despite all the pressures Iranian society is facing these days, we have tried to immunize the displaced Afghans as much as possible, but immediate and serious international assistance is needed in this regard,” the senior Iranian diplomat said. .
The Afghan government collapsed on August 15 and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country in the face of lightning Taliban advances following a hasty and poorly executed withdrawal of foreign forces from the country. Fears of violence and poverty have prompted many Afghans to seek refuge in neighboring countries and elsewhere.
The ICRC president praised Iran’s close cooperation with the committee and its valuable efforts to welcome the Afghan refugees.
Maurer also stressed the importance of improving health infrastructure in Afghanistan and said humanitarian activities in the war-affected country should not be limited to sending commodities.
